Buying an High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cable looks like a simple task for many people. HDMI cables are manufactured, designed and tested to extremely rigid specifications by their makers, but not all of them are created equal. Because of this, it is important for people to do a little research about the HDMI cable that they are planning to buy.

This helps buyers avoid troublesome returns and costly mistakes. There are several things that people should look at in an HDMI cable to make sure that they are getting their money’s worth.

Construction

Construction refers to how an HDMI cable is manufactured and is always related to the materials used. When purchasing an HDMI cable, people should look how the data transfer wires are protected, coated and shielded. This is because a huge amount of visual and audio data is transferred through the HDMI cable.

At the same time, a customer should make sure that the cable is manufactured from high quality materials and protected from possible interference. They should also look for innovative internal design features that are intended to improve the cable’s reliability and performance.

In-Wall Rating

The in-wall rating is another important consideration for a person who is planning to run their HDMI cable through their wall into another room. A number of HDMI cables are rated to be used this way while others are not. The visual and audio experience might not achieve the quality that an individual is expecting if they run an unrated cable through their wall.

A person who needs an in-wall HDMI cable should always check the specifications of the cable that they are buying. If they are in doubt, they should ask questions to avoid making the wrong purchase.

Connectors

An HDMI cable’s connector should also be closely scrutinized. This is because the connector’s quality makes a big difference in the sound and picture produced. At the same time, the best connectors are gold plated.

Gold is a good signal conductor. It does not tarnish easily, and it does not greatly affect the price of an HDMI cable. It is also a good material for electrical coupling. People should also look for HDMI cables with connectors that are fabricated using zinc oxide if they want improved RFI and EM shielding.

Speed Rating

The speed rating refers to the cable’s performance in data transfer. An HDMI cable will always be rated for its capability to process visual and audio frequencies along with its speed. A good HDMI cable has the capability to continuously handle a throughput of at least 10.2 GBPS. This enables it to be compatible with high definition signals that can reach up to 1080p resolution and full HD 3D. Higher speed ratings indicate increased bandwidth to support intercommunication, audio and video features for future and emerging technologies.

Bit Depth Rating

High quality HDMI cables often offer high bandwidth. This means they have the capability to transmit more specific color data than a poorly constructed cable. A basic HDMI cable can handle an 8-bit color stream while more high-bandwidth and sophisticated models have the capability for 12-bit, 10-bit and even 14-bit color depth.

Length

A person should also look at the length of the HDMI cable that they are planning to purchase. Cables that are longer than six to ten feet always require additional shielding and security.
